The egg is a solid of revolution: rotate its outline around the long axis and the whole form appears. A sphere looks the same from every side; the egg has a direction, a pointed end and a blunt end.
In the creation stories of many cultures, an egg stands at the beginning of the world, as the “world egg” from which everything comes, for example in ancient Egypt or in the Finnish epic Kalevala.
